Among the parameters that most accurately describe their behavior during processing, a special place is held by MFI (Melt Flow Index) and MFR (Melt Flow Rate). These two indicators are essential for evaluating how materials react to heat and pressure. Critical factors that define their usability in processes like injection molding or extrusion.

How Do We Conduct MFI/MFR Testing at Malplast?

At Malplast, we follow ISO 1133-1 standards to ensure that our MFI/MFR results are both reliable and consistent. Our go-to equipment is the REO-100 plastometer from Hydrapress — a dependable, modern tool that fits seamlessly into our daily workflow.

Testing starts by preparing a sample of accurately measured mass, which is placed into the plastometer’s chamber. Once the target temperature is reached, the material softens and is pushed through a precisely shaped nozzle using a specific load. Tailored to the type of plastic under examination.

We then measure how many grams of material are extruded in 10 minutes — this gives us the MFR value. In certain cases, we also determine the Melt Volume Rate (MVR), which tracks the volume of plastic that flows instead.

Why Is Knowing the MFR Value Important?

MFR results provide key insight into how a plastic behaves during processing. A higher MFR means the material flows more easily, usually indicating lower viscosity. This is valuable information for manufacturers when choosing materials. Some are better suited for rapid injection of thin parts, others for producing more complex or heavy-duty components.

MFR testing is also vital for quality control. It helps detect batch inconsistencies, ensures alignment with documentation, and confirms the stability of production processes.
